The establishment of an Aboriginal-controlled legal service in South Australia is part of a national movement to improve the legal and civil rights of Aboriginal people over-represented in the criminal justice system. The Parents Legal Centre (PLC) strives to help parents resolve their child protection issues quickly and collaboratively. It provides services at all stages of the child protection issue. We work and coordinate with the legal aid sector, national coalitions such as Change the Record and the Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Bodies The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander National Legal Service (NATSILS) is concerned that without additional funding for legal aid services or the Peak Justice Body, our population will be disproportionately over-represented in the criminal justice system. We do legal education work on topics of interest to the communities we visit. Our members have over 50 years of experience providing culturally safe legal aid, community legal education, legal reform and advocacy to our communities. Self-determination and cultural security are the foundation of everything we do. We coordinate and support ATSILS to provide community-controlled, representative, high-quality and accountable legal services that are culturally safe. This includes exchanging good practices and facilitating coordinated approaches.

Change the Record and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services expressed dismay that another Aboriginal man died in custody without consequences. The Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia Limited is registered as a limited liability company and is governed by an all-Aboriginal Board of Directors. We recognise that the Kaurna people are the custodians of the greater Adelaide area and that their cultural and cultural beliefs are equally important to the Kaurna people living today.

ALRM is disappointed by the announcement that the Attorney General`s Office (MAG) “supports the development of a proposal to raise the minimum age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 12 years, including with regard to fallout, timing and discussions on implementation support.” We recognize the enduring connection to the land, water and community, as well as the right of Indigenous peoples and communities to self-determination.
