Once students complete the two required courses in Legal Analysis, Writing, and Research in the first year, they will have the opportunity to further develop their skills in a variety of ways. You can sign up for advanced legal drafting seminars and contract drafting workshops. You can also enroll in the Vocation Writing and Advocacy course, which serves as a gateway to Marquette Law`s moot court competitions. Finally, they have the opportunity to participate in the editorial boards of various journals. All these experiences enrich students` legal education, regardless of the area of law they choose. Our goal is to help you reach a professional level of writing with well-reasoned logical analysis, concise research and clear presentation. You`ll graduate with at least eight credits in legal analysis, research, and writing, so you can make it to your job or internship interview with a portfolio of examples of your work. These reflect the wide range of writing lawyers do today – from a quick email memo to a fully documented trial letter, as well as transactional documents from specialized practice areas of interest to you.
Each first-year student completes a full year of legal analysis, research, and writing (LARW), which uses real-world problems and hands-on labs that introduce students to the work of lawyers. In LARW, students learn how to analyze cases and laws, locate relevant legal authorities, and communicate effectively in a “simple language style.” Throughout the course, students must go beyond the specification of relevant legal rules. You need to offer a practical analysis of how these rules might be applied to a client`s needs. Because legal research and legal analysis are intrinsically linked, LARW faculty members integrate research teaching throughout the first year of study.
